Education Drug Diversion Intervention Team (EDDIT) provides outreach early intervention services to children and young people between the ages of 10 and 25 years where there is a risk of drug use. This includes families where the parent is drug using.
Aims of the Program
Education Drug Diversion Intervention Team (EDDIT) provides outreach early intervention services to children and young people between the ages of 10 and 30 years where there is a risk of drug use. This includes families where the parent is drug using.
The service works from a harm minimization perspective, supporting the young person to make their own choices about their drugs use and any potential change and the service is delivered in the context of a co-morbidity framework. EDDIT also works at addressing the underlying issues that relate to offending and the impact this has on the individual, family, community and criminal justice system.

Police Drug Diversion Initiative (PDDI)
Young people aged between 10 -30 years are referred by the police as a result of a minor drug offence for counseling, support and information.
Although this can be a one off intervention there is the opportunity to have long term intervention with the client and their families, in relation to drug use and a range of other issues.
How to Make a Referral:
All referrals to this part of the program is through the Police Drug Diversion Line.
Court Assessment & Referral Drug Scheme (CARDS)
The scheme targets defendants who appear before the Magistrates Court, Youth Court or Family Conference Team and enables them, where eligible, to access support to deal with drug and/or alcohol issues as part of the Justice process. During the time the young person is involved with the CARDS program the Court proceedings are adjourned for a period of 12 weeks to enable a minimum of four counseling sessions to occur prior to the Court hearing. Centacare workers provide assessment, counselling and information to the client. At the end of this period the worker is required to submit a formal treatment report to the Court.
How to Make a Referral:
The young person, the lawyer or the Magistrate can refer to a CARDS Assessor in the relevant Court who makes an assessment of the person’s eligibility for this Scheme, they can then make referrals to Centacare.
| Other Services
Where there is capacity, workers from the EDDIT Program will take referrals from voluntary clients. If there is no capacity then these clients will the referred to the Drug and Alcohol Service (CDAS) program. EDDIT is also involved in various community development activities such as presentations to small groups of young people, drug action teams and school projects.
