Safe Space for Women: The Haven Launches in Riverland

On Wednesday September 18, The Haven, Riverland officially launched. The Haven provides a safe space for women to access information and referrals for services such as domestic and family violence support, family and relationship services, education and training, health and wellbeing, housing and accommodation options, financial matters, women's groups and more. This free service is available without the need for a referral.

The Haven is run by Centacare staff member Dani, the Haven's Community Partner, along with volunteers. Currently, there are two volunteers, but we are actively seeking more to join the team.

Having this service in the Riverland means that more women can access support without any criteria to meet. It is completely confidential, with the only information collected being a woman’s postcode. In a close-knit community, this ensures that women can trust their stories will remain private.

The Haven is located in the historic C.W.A. (Country Women’s Association) building, which was built in 1955. The building originally housed a restroom and meeting room for the C.W.A., as well as a Mother’s and Babies' room. Given the C.W.A.’s mission to improve the lives of women and children in rural and regional areas, it is fitting that The Haven now occupies this meaningful space.

We are grateful for the support of the Berri Barmera Council, who have been instrumental in securing this location. Mayor Ella Winnell, a strong advocate for women's safety and access to services in the Riverland region, has been wonderful to work with.

The Haven is supported by The Office for Women and Centacare Catholic Community Services.

Opening hours are 10am – 2pm, Monday to Friday.
