Young Carer Support Services

Young Carer Support Services (YCSS) provide case management and mentorship to youth aged 5-25 who identify as young carers in Northern Adelaide, including the Barossa, Lower Light and surrounding areas.

About our service

Our coordinators work with young carers for up to 12 months, assisting with goal-setting and fostering self-advocacy and independence. Sessions, which last up to an hour, can be held at the young carer's home, our office, school, or community settings like parks or cafes, based on the young carer's needs.

We are based at Seaton with outreach support in Northern Adelaide, Barossa and Lower Light North areas.

This service is funded by the Department of Human Services.

Our supports

Our young carer coordinators will work one-on-one with young carers to assist in the following areas:

  • improve young carers’ wellbeing,
  • increase education and employment opportunities,
  • strengthen connections with communities, support networks and services.

Eligibility

Our service is for:

  • Individuals aged 5-25, who are in an unpaid caring capacity.
  • Living in Northern Adelaide Metropolitan or Barossa, Lower Light North areas.
  • Not registered with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

A young carer is an individual who may provide personal care, support and/or assistance to a family member or loved one who has: 

  • a disability,
  • a mental illness,
  • a long-term health condition,
  • a terminal illness,
  • an alcohol or drug-related problem,
  • dementia or is frail due to age.

Referrals

We accept:

  • self-referrals,
  • referrals from clinical and non-clinical service providers,
  • referrals from family members and friends.
